Patient Transportation & Non-Insured Health Benefits

HHS can assist with patient travel costs to Victoria, Nanaimo or Vancouver to attend medical appointments with a Specialist.

Even while working under these constraints, the Patient Travel program assisted numerous families with their travel costs to medical appointments, surgeries, dental surgeries and other treatments as required.

We look forward to continue assisting community members with their travel costs

NON INSURED HEALTH BENEFITS

  • The Inter Tribal Health Authority (ITHA) currently manages four of Health Canada's six non-insured health benefits. ITHA does not yet manage dental or pharmacy benefits for its members; these are managed by Health Canada.  Benefits currently provided by ITHA include:
    • Medical Supplies and Equipment (MS&E)
    • Vision and Routine Eye Exams
    • Mental Health off-reserve
    • Medical Transportation for some of our member communities
  • The Non-Insured Health Benefits Program is Health Canada's national, medically necessary health benefit program that provides coverage for benefit claims for a specified range of drugs, dental care, vision care, medical supplies and equipment, short-term crisis intervention mental health counselling and medical transportation for eligible First Nations people and Inuit.
  • Coverage for dental services is determined on an individual basis, taking into consideration the current oral health status, recipient history, accumulated scientific research, and availability of treatment alternatives.
  • The Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) Program funds prescription and over-the-counter medications that are not covered by other private or provincial/territorial health insurance plans.
