PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS:
Back to Basics
Parenting Program held in partnership with Kw’umut Lelum, this program taught parents basic life skills, including cleaning, cooking, budgeting.
Women’s Group
Designed for young women aged 16+, this is a support group that allows them to come together to share and talk. This group meets every Tues and is open to new participants.
Aqua Fit Exercise Program
Aqua Fit is held once a week on Mondays at the Cowichan Aquatic Centre in Duncan. This program provides a low impact cardio workout.
Diabetes Camp
Usually held in the summer, this camp features three days of workshops and crafts. The last camp was held at the Halalt bank office and Transfer Beach.
Scrimmage Day
Scrimmage Day is held at the Halalt soccer field once per month in June, July and August. This event is for youth and provides an opportunity for them to build friendships, self esteem, and communication skills.
Home Visits
Accompanied with a nurse, the Community Health Coordinators visit those members who are chronically ill, elders, newborns and their moms, diabetics and others who require assistance in their home.
Elder’s Lunch
Held once per month in partnership with Malahat and Lyackson these lunches provide our Elders with social interaction and promotes healthy eating.
Dental Health
Prevention and screening for good dental health.
Kid’s Community Kitchen
This program promotes healthy cooking with a registered dietician. Children learn to cook good healthy food in a monitored environment.
Prenatal/Postnatal Program
Good food boxes are provided twice a month and pre-natal/postnatal classes were held every Monday to share experiences and information.
Elders Good Food Box
Good Food Boxes are provided twice a month to the Elders who participate in the Elder’s luncheons and include an array of healthy foods.
Women’s Day Outing
Usually held once a month, these outings help women learn how to shop for their families on a limited budget.
Healthy Children, Healthy Futures
This program is hosted twice a year in partnership with CSETS and promotes shared learning about parenting.
Prenatal Nutrition Program
This program seeks to improve the health of pre/post natal moms and babies by offering programs such as prenatal workshops; healthy cooking; dental hygiene, sexual health; Elders teachings; healthy hygiene; professional talks with pharmacists, dental hygienists, nutritionists. The program also provides good food boxes every two weeks.
Aboriginal Diabetes Initiative
Several programs are run through this initiative, and all promote healthier lifestyles for community members. Main programs include: Diabetes Circle, Diabetic Good food Box, Youth Diabetes Camp.
Healthy Communities Program
The program purpose is to improve the communities awareness of healthy lifestyles and to connect the community. Programs include – community gatherings; food safe workshops; dental program, pandemic planning; communications workshops; cancer workshops; vision clinics; hearing screening; bug busting; mould inspecting/reporting and Elder’s Luncheons.
Brighter Futures
This program connects with the youth of the community, in a fun and safe environment. Activities include: movie days; craft days; Elder’s visits; coming of age workshops; dental health; hand washing; physical activities; reading program; intertribal sports days; youth conferences and more.
Mental Health & Addictions
Programming has a goal to reduce the rates of substance abuse. Activities include intervention; prevention and aftercare activities; one on one counseling services; referrals to treatment centres; drug and alcohol workshops; anger management workshops; parenting workshops; scared straight workshops; men’s, women’s and teen groups; Ladies day out, FAS workshops, Violence against women candlelight vigils; diabetes talks; Elders Luncheons and National Addictions Awareness week activities.
Community Garden
Food is essential item for our programs and gatherings. The garden includes Jerusalem artichoke, tomatoes, herbs, parsley, arugula, green beans, carrots, potatoes and lettuce and has provided these fresh vegetables for meals at the Health Unit and distribute out to community members who are in need. The community garden committee has 9 members and three individuals assist with weeding and watering twice daily.
Fitness Class
We have introduced a trainer – Tanya Knight to start a walking program as well as speed, strength, and agility training. Participants have ranged in age from 19 – 60 years of age
After School Program
Paula Norris is providing supplemental education services to students. She has tailored individualized learning plans that build the skills, habits, and attitudes students need to succeed in school and in life. The personalized approach to learning with a caring instructor will put your child on the path to school success. This program is available every Wednesday & Thursday 3-5pm.
